私の場合、cvs からではなく tar.gz からだったので、
nmz/Makefile.in の該当部分を変更して、make が通り、mknmz/namazu
とも日本語表示になるのを確認しました。

以下、話は違うのですが、gettext 関連なので続けて。。。
久しぶりにじっくりと出力メッセージを見たところ、ja.po の

の部分だけ、英語表示になります。なんのことだか全然わからないけど、

% msgfmt -V

となっているので、fuzzy だぜと思い、po/Makefile を
.po.gmo:

として、再度 ja.gmo を作り、それを使ったところ、

『検索対象のファイルを調べています...』

となりました。ただし、ja_JP.SJIS.mo と es.gmo は

となってしまいます。(理由その他は全然わかっていません (_ _))
